I don't know about you, but there are days when my focus resembles that of a squirrel—bouncing from one thing to another, never quite staying on task for long. I’ll start one project, then hop up to do something else, only to be distracted again. It becomes especially tricky when I walk into another room to do a task, see one or two things to do while I’m there only to forget why I came in the first place. I have to pause and ask myself, “What was I supposed to be doing?”
Sometimes, it feels like life is a series of interruptions—both from the outside world and within myself. It’s helpful to live in a small space, so it's only a few steps to return to where I started.
After a few whirlwinds of wandering thought and action, I stop. I pause. I breathe. It’s in that stillness, however brief, that I remember the simple yet powerful prayer for focus. “Lord, my interruptions got interrupted. What do You want me to focus on right now? What is the most efficient thing for me to do in this moment? My mind is racing in all directions, but I need You to help me choose the right path.”
And in that quiet moment, the response often comes. It’s subtle—like a soft whisper rising to the surface of my heart. Oh yes, there it is: the thing I was meant to focus on. The task at hand, the step I need to
Focus, after all, is a gift—a precious gift. And I know that every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father who never changes, who always knows exactly what we need and when we need it. In the midst of chaos, He is the one who brings peace—not the kind that erases the hard things, but the kind that grants us strength and direction to face them with assurance. A quiet strength, knowing that He is with us and that there is a way forward, even when it seems unclear.
"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of all that gives light, in whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." James 1:17 (AMPC)
So, when life gets overwhelming and distractions seem to have the upper hand, I will remember the gifts that come from God. His peace. His direction. His presence. And I will trust that, with His help, I can refocus and move forward with clarity and purpose.
