I am contending for you that your hearts will be wrapped in the comfort of heaven and woven together into love’s fabric. This will give you access to all the riches of God as you experience the revelation of God’s great mystery—Christ. For our spiritual wealth is in him, like hidden treasure waiting to be discovered—heaven’s wisdom and endless riches of revelation knowledge. (Colossians 2:2-3 The Passion Translation)
Treasure hunts are fun. It’s exciting to think of buried treasure. What will I find? Who hid it? How long has it been there? The questions swirl in anticipation of the discovery. Searching for clues along the way leads deeper with more digging to unearth what’s not in plain view.
People easily understand certain biblical passages. The basic simple truth is that we are all sinners, and Jesus died to pay the price for us so we could be in a relationship with a holy God. Eternal life awaits those who believe. Simple enough a child can grasp it.
Other things leave us pondering the relevance or significance. Desert tabernacle construction: What’s the reason for such specificity? How does that relate to us today? For this, one has to dig deeper to see the relationship between things in heaven and its representation on earth. Between the physical tabernacle to house God’s glory and the temple of our body that can house God’s presence.
Spiritual paradoxes look like a buried “Y” with only the two tips showing. A deeper look shows the connection. Then it makes perfect sense, where before it seemed unrelated. If I go deeper still, it leads me back to Jesus.
“He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17 NASB) Even molecules, protons, and the tiniest of particles. Most relevantly, I hold together with Him holding on to me. It gives me great comfort that He never lets me go, but surrounds and comforts me.
From the simplicity of belief as a child through the maturing faith that digs deep for more revelation, Jesus is my great treasure.
